PROJECT CODE

HOG-R-14 (The Lightwell Residence)
The name references the defining architectural feature: a vertical screen of terracotta louvers that wraps the façade, providing privacy and thermal control while creating a distinct visual identity.

The Terracotta Veil is a distinct exploration of privacy and light in a dense urban context. Defined by its kinetic façade of vertical terracotta louvers, the architecture creates a breathable skin that filters harsh sunlight while maintaining visual connections with the outdoors. Inside, the spatial narrative is anchored by a central double-height void capped with a skylight, which washes the core living areas in diffused natural light.

The material palette is a sophisticated interplay of textures: cool white terrazzo with brass inlays grounds the public zones, while warmer green kota stone defines the private quarters. The interiors feature a curated mix of teak wood furniture, rattan detailing, and exposed concrete surfaces that lend a raw, honest aesthetic to the staircase volume. From the sage-green bespoke kitchen to the playful loft design in the children's room, every corner is meticulously detailed. The residence culminates in a landscaped rooftop terrace, offering a serene retreat under a wooden pergola.

DESIGN HIGHLIGHTS

  • Facade Strategy: A custom terracotta louver system acts as a thermal buffer and privacy screen, softening the building's brutalist geometry.
  • Light & Volume: A central atrium with a large skylight brings daylight deep into the floor plate, connecting the vertical levels visually.
  • Material Duality: The transition from white terrazzo flooring in social spaces to tactile green limestone in bedrooms creates a subconscious zoning of public vs. private areas.
  • Craftsmanship: Extensive use of traditional cane (rattan) weaving in wardrobes and furniture adds a layer of tropical nostalgia and artisanal warmth.
  • Exposed Structure: The staircase features exposed concrete walls and floating wooden treads, celebrating the structural honesty of the home.
